In Virginia, the owner of a poker hall is trying to get the state to allow him to resume hosting Texas Hold ‘em games at his casino.
Charles Daniels, the owner and operator of the Poker Palace in Portsmouth, is asking a judge to issue and injunction that would let games get back up and running at his facility.
Daniels contends that that Texas Hold ‘em is a game of skill, not chance, making it legal under Virginia’s gambling laws.
Up until recently, Poker halls had flourished in Portsmouth because of a long-held stance that state’s law on the subject was too murky to prosecute the games as illegal gambling.
However; on July 22nd, Portsmouth Commonwealth’s Attorney Earle C. Mobley announced that the games would be viewed as illegal gambling. Mobley sited that he did not want Portsmouth “to become a gambling center.”
The poker halls were forced to shut their doors soon thereafter.
