Alabama’s last remaining non-Indian casino has received a short stay of execution.
The state’s Supreme Court denied the request from the Task Force on Illegal Gambling to immediately remove the restraining order that was overturned by the court on July 30 and allow an immediate raid of the gaming facility.
That ruling declared that the governor’s task force did not need approval from local law officials to conduct the raid however the Macon County sheriff and district attorney asked the court to delay the process so that they had time to appeal. They argued that the electronic bingo machines that the task force claims are actually slot machines have been shut down and there was no reason the raid needed to be conduct immediately.
Victoryland’s owners have reopened the dog track but the bingo machines will remain shut down until the appeal is heard or another restraining order is in place.
Alabama’s residents that support the casinos are hoping that the Governor will be replaced after the November election with a candidate that supports gambling.
