Sunday afternoon, the oldest golf course in the world may have just revealed the sports newest superstar.
This year’s Open Championship at the Old Course at St. Andrews is in the books and 27 year old Louis Oosthuizen has won his first major golf championship in dominating fashion.
Oosthuizen began the day with a four-stroke lead that turned into 1-under 71 in the final round for and a 16-under 272 for the tournament. He won by seven strokes, although he had a chance to tie Tiger Woods’ eight stroke win from a decade ago.
The win put him in elite company as the South African now joins Woods, John Daly, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Jack Nicklaus as the only Open Championship winners at St. Andrews in the past thirty years.
England’s Paul Casey came into Sunday as Britain’s best hope to end an 11-year winless streak in its home championship; however, in the end, England’s Lee Westwood shot 70 and wound up as the tournament runner-up at 279.
This weekend’s dominance now raises the question; will Oosthuizen simply be a “flash in the pan” or join the ranks as one of golf’s elite.
