Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands may be close to joining neighboring Islands that are offering gambling, if the bill does not “get killed in the Senate”.
The House of Representatives of the U.S. Commonwealth has voted 10-3 with three abstentions to pass the measure; however many in the Senate are not favoring the bill without amendments to the current write up.
Two years ago Saipan voters rejected a ballot initiative to legalize casinos on the island; however some parliament members are turning to possible gambling revenues to help boost tourism dollars.
The casino initiative failed 4,721 to 3,492 although neighboring Rota approved casinos on their island and is pending development from one investor who has been licensed for a gaming facility.
Similarly the island if Tinian has offered gambling since 1998 at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino.
