While struggles continue to plaque Maryland’s two year attempt to add slot machine casinos as a form of additional revenue for the state, commissioners approve a measure to sweeten the deal.
In 2008 Maryland approved legislation to allow five casinos in the state, however none have been opened yet and one site has no potential developers.
The Maryland Commission has opened a second round of bidding to attract a casino developer at the Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort location.
The Rocky Gap is the smallest of the facilities allowed only 1,500 machines and is tied to the state subsidized resort. However in an effort to attract potential developers this time around lawmakers have passed legislation that will allow the operator to receive 35.5% of gambling revenue for the first five years, compared to the 33% allowed at the other locations.
The developer will also be allowed to house 300 slot machines inside the resort while a separate structure is being built, the state will also now allow the facility to be connected to the resort through a covered walkway.
The state is asking for proposals to be submitted by November 9, with the hopes of selecting an operator by the end of the year.
