Although voters must approve the Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona Iowa to continue gambling operations for the next eight years, casino officials are betting on the referendum passing.
This week, Prairie Meadows announced that their Board of Directors voted 13-0 to authorize construction work to begin on a hotel addition.
If preliminary work is approved by the Polk County Board of Supervisors, Prairie Meadows will begin demolition and landscaping work that would be necessary to prepare the land for the hotel.
Phase one of the $29 million project will include demolishing a canopy at the North entrance and leveling the ground.
Casino officials said that phase one will cost approximately $1 million and take place between September 22 and October 7, even before voters go to the polls.
Phase two has also been approved by the Board and contingent on County approval but will include building a temporary entrance to the venue and laying the foundation and steel frame work of the hotel.
Phase two is expected to take until February 1, 2011; with the total project taking about 14 months opening toward the end of 2011 or early 2012.
Financing for the project will be finalized after the results from the ballot are in.
