A proposed horse racing track and casino in Lawrence County has asked the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission for a licensing extension in order to have more time to raise the money needed to finance the project.
Centaur Gaming’s financing for the Valley View Downs & Casino fell through last year causing them to file for bankruptcy in order to restructure its debt.
The Indianapolis-based company needs to raise $400 million to move forward with construction plans under the current license that expires in September. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has not awarded a slots license to the project because financing is not readily available.
Centaur officials expressed their commitment to the project and asked Lawrence County Commissioner Dan Vogler to provide a letter of support for the extension. The commissioner obliged as he continues to help the company explore possible options to finance the project. However Senator John Wozniak is proposing a bill to convert the projects Category I license into a casino only license and asking regulators to revoke the license so that other contenders can apply.
