Ireland’s largest bookmaker, Paddy Power, is rethinking plans to bring jobs to country, with pending tax laws being proposed.
Paddy Power, operates licensed betting offices, phone and internet gambling options out of Ireland and was planning an expansion that could employee 750 people over the course of the next three years, however the government is proposing “a tax on Irish jobs” and including internet and phone betting.
Patrick Kennedy, chief executive, said “We don’t have an issue with paying betting taxation. Our issue is if we have to pay it solely because we employ people in Ireland.”
Kennedy added that another 10 major gaming companies market their offerings in Ireland but only two staff employees there.
350 of the proposed 750 jobs would have been stationed in Ireland but given the risk that the government will introduce the tax, Kennedy says they are reconsidering.
