While the United States Congress continues to drag their feet as they consider the legalization of online gambling, north of the board in Canada, provinces are lining up to get into the action.
Ontario will be the latest to join the world of Internet wagering as the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has announced that it is planning to launch a government-owned and regulated online gambling website in 2012.
According to financial experts, online gambling is already a close to $400 million industry in Ontario that currently operates illegally and is unregulated.
Premier Dalton McGuinty looks at the Internet gambling industry as a way to help bridge the gap between balancing the province’s budget and the $20 billion deficit he currently faces.
He also sees regulating the industry as a good was to help protect his constituents that currently play online on websites that offer their customers no protection against scams.
The idea is; that the tax revenue brought in by this state-run online gambling portal will help fund schools, hospitals, and other public works.
