For many college students a Las Vegas feel may soon be inserted into the classroom. These days, students bet their future on the success they can achieve on campus.
Now, at some major universities they can literally put money on it.
A new online gambling website, Ultrinsic.com, is letting students wager on the grades they will receive on the college courses that they take.
The company bills their site as a way for students to earn money while trying to reach their goals as well as a good source of motivation for college students to stay focused on their classes. They feel they it is less about betting and more about an incentive program.
Ultrinsic lets students choose a goal and put up money, starting at $25. The company puts up more cash and if the student achieves their goal, they keep all the money. If they do not, the company keeps the money.
Most critics think that this is just a creative way to get around Internet gambling laws and that this concept has no place in the classroom.
Supports have more of a realistic approach, saying that, in this day in age, students can use all the motivational help they can get and what could be more motivation then cash to a starving college student.
