British Columbia’s government sanctioned online gambling site, playnow.com, drew so much attention on its first day that the site crashed.
The site hit 100% capacity by early Thursday afternoon causing it to be shut down until late Friday evening while additional hardware and servers were added to support the high demand.
“It’s been an overwhelming success with people in British Columbia” said Michael Graydon, president of the BC Lottery Corp that operates the site.
150 new users registered on the site before the site was taken down in addition to the 135,000 residents that were previously registered to play lottery games on the site before the casino games were added.
Government officials re-launched the website on Thursday as a safe online casino in an attempt to attract gamblers that have been estimated to wager more than $100 million a year on the 2,000 unregulated sites accessible in the region.
