According to Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, he is has some spots to fill on the state’s brand-new Casino Control Commission.
Strickland will be trying to fill a seven member panel of gaming regulators to oversee gambling halls in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo, as well as other slot-machine parlors all across Ohio.
Ohio rules say that the board must have at least one attorney, a certified public accountant and someone with a law-enforcement background. Strickland’s choices will have to be approved by the Ohio State Senate.
Another guideline that the governor must abide by is that none of the members are permitted to be affiliated with any of the developers of the state’s existing casinos.
Also, the board must be bipartisan. Of the seven spots on the panel, only four can be of the same political party.
With a diverse number of applications of known gambling opponents as well as supporters already received by the governor’s office, it will be interesting to see who Strickland chooses.
Strickland opposed the legislation that brought casino gambling to Ohio; however he supported slot machines in race tracks.
He has until mid-September to have the commission up and running.
