The British Columbia government has rolled out the first government-sanctioned online casino, PlayNow.com, on Thursday.
According to the Minister of Housing and Social Development, Rich Coleman, B.C. residents spend $100 million a year on illegal gambling sites, however with the new site operated by the B.C. Lottery Corp, gamblers will be able to enjoy more than 75 online casino games, regulated by the government with proceeds benefiting social programs, health care and education.
Players can play popular online games like blackjack, craps and baccarat through five categories that include casino, bingo, sports, lottery and games.
The launch comes just two days after Joyce Ross filed a civil lawsuit against B.C. Lottery Corp alleging that the volunteer self exclusion program failed when she was able to enter two casinos and gambled over $300,000.
However the Lottery Corp says that safeguards are in place and that only residents of British Columbia will be able to access the site, registered users must be at least 19 years old and are verified against the self-exclusion list. Pre-set wagering limits have also been established preventing gamblers from betting more than $9,999 a week.
