Track officials know it’s not a sure thing, however Vernon Downs Casino and Raceway is hoping that their facility could become a full-blown casino now that the New York State Senate has put a plan in motion.
The Senate passed a bill that could ask New York voters whether they want to change the state’s constitution to allow full, Vegas-style casino gambling in some parts of the state.
For the new legislation to become law it has a long road in front of it. The bill would have to pass the Assembly, be signed by the governor, pass both houses a second time, then survive a vote in the 2011 general election.
Jeff Gural, principal owner of Vernon Downs, is hopeful.
“It would give us another option when we compete with Turning Stone,” he said. “I think if you ask gamblers, sometimes they like to switch casinos just when they think their luck is bad. Having two casinos would be good for the area.”
Gural also feel like this legislation should be considered more of a jobs bill than about casinos. According to his estimates, turning Vernon Downs into a full-blown casino would more than double his staff and create hundreds of jobs.
