On Tuesday morning, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will be holding a gambling debate for the proposed Gettysburg casino project.
Town that once saw one of the bloodiest battles in American history is fighting again as a mixture of support and opposition has split the community over a casino plan that would place a gambling hall extremely close, some say too close, to the historic battlefield.
Many call the proposed site hallowed ground because of the countless unmarked graves of American soldiers in the area.
“It seems like a lot of people, they just want more business, they want more money to flow in the community at any cost, and that’s really upsetting,” said Barbara Schultz, a Gettysburg native, business owner and casino opponent.
Supporters look to the economic boost a casino could bring to the region. They point to the hundreds of jobs the creation of a casino would bring to the many locals out of work.
They see an enormous upside that an influx of money would give to the many struggling businesses in Gettysburg.
Opponents say that the casino will cheapen the wholesome reputation that draws tourists to Gettysburg.
With both sides having a compelling argument, the board has a difficult decision to make.
