California resident, Ronnie Katzin, will think twice next time he tries to do a favor for a famous casino.
Last November, MGM Resorts International filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District court of Las Vegas alleging that Katzin was the owner of a website that was infringing on the gaming company’s New York New York Resort’s trademark.
MGM accused Katzin of trademark infringement and cybersquating saying that he used copyrighted photo’s of the property and linked it to an Expedia search engine.
Katzin countered that the use of the link was approved by MGM, which they denied, and that he was doing the casino operator a favor because many of the site’s visitors had mistaken the site for the resort’s official website.
The Judge in the case entered a default judgement against Katzin and ruled that the site violated the Anti-cybersquating Consumer Protection Act. Katzin was ordered to transfer NewYorkNewYork.com to MGM and fined $101,000.
