With neighboring New Hampshire taking a long and hard look at the launch of online lottery games like slots, speed bingo and poker, Massachusetts is considering a proposal of their own that could bring Internet gambling to their residents through the state lottery.
According to reports, the Icelandic company Betware has been involved in talks with Massachusetts legislators as well as lottery officials to discuss the idea of bringing over its first U.S. online gaming operation.
Betware CEO Stefan Hrafnkelsson said that he thinks that the Massachusetts State Lottery is the best fit for such an endeavor.
“They are innovative,” said Hrafnkelsson “They have technical expertise.”
There are many interpretations of the law concerning the legality of online lotteries in the United States.
However, Hrafnkelsson has pointed out that while the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) prohibits banks from processing transactions associated with Internet wagering, there is an exemption included in the legislation for state lotteries to operate.
The State Lottery Commission did in fact confirm meeting with Betware executives, but would not say that they had any intentions on moving forward with the project.
