The owners of Maine’s two casinos have formed an alliance with other gaming and entertainment interest to oppose Black Bear Entertainment’s Oxford development.
In November Maine voters will be asked if they support a “casino with table games and slot machines at a single site in Oxford County, subject to local approval, with part of the profits going to specific state, local and tribal programs.”
Penn National Gaming the owner of Hollywood Slots in Bangor and the Passamaquoddy Tribe the owner of Penobscot High Stakes Bingo Casino have formed a coalition with the Maine Association of Agricultural Fairs, the Maine Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association, the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association and the Greater Bangor Convention and Visitor’s Bureau have formed the “Citizens Against the Oxford Casino” group to oppose the resort that would include a casino, hotel, convention center and outdoor recreational opportunities.
The Bangor City Council officials voted unanimously not to support the development because the proposal would allow the new casino to offer table games, that are not permitted elsewhere in the state and imposes lower tax rates on the new casino. However Black Bear was able to collect enough signatures to force the measure to be included on November’s ballot.
“What this boils down to is that Question 1 on this November’s ballot is a bad deal for Maine,” said Dan Cashman a spokesman for the group.
