The proposal by state Senator Ray Lezniak to allow gaming operators licensed in New Jersey to run intrastate online casinos is moving forward and will be heard in the new several weeks. According to EGRmagazine, legislators met today to discuss the fine-tuning of the bill, with a vote in the Senate expected before the new year.
Permitting casinos in Atlantic City to operate online gambli8ng sites is the latest concept in a series of measures seeking to stop the financial spiral of New Jersey gaming revenue. Allowing customers to wager without having to physically attend a casino may offset losses by New Jersey gambling to neighboring states’ slot rooms.
According to a study by iMEGA, the Lesniak bill could create $250 million in annual gaming revenue, along with more than $55 million for state coffers.
Legislating for the bill has turned ugly, with Lesniak and iMEGA accusing Harrah’s Entertainment of obstructing broader gambling laws suggested by Lesniak, including the online casino bill and another fighting the federal ban on sports gambling.
