Penn National Gaming, Inc. and MI Developments Inc. has announced that they are ready and financially able to fight to install slot machines at Laurel Park if Maryland voters shoot down a referendum in November to bring a slots parlor to the Arundel Mills Mall.
Following yesterday’s ruling from the state’s highest court, voters will be asked in November if they support the development of a casino at the mall.
Penn National joined MI Developments earlier this month as joint venture partners in the Maryland Jockey Club which operates races at both Laurel Park and Pimlico. Prior to Penn’s involvement the Maryland Jockey Club had previously attempted to win a gaming license to operate slots at the tracks, however lost out to Cordish Cos. due to a lack of funding.
Penn National purchased a stake in the tracks as a means to provide adequate financing if the mall casino fell through.
“If Anne Arundel voters strike down County approved plans for a VLT facility at Arundel Mills mall in November, we are prepared to deploy our company’s extensive racing and gaming industry knowledge and excellent financial resources to work with the local horsemen and community members and leaders in Laurel to advocate for a license to operate VLTs at Laurel Park.” commented Peter M. Carlino, Chief Executive Officer of Penn National.
