Indiana’s riverboat casinos and horse tracks are now required to withhold casino winnings from parents owing back child support.
New state laws went into effect on July 1, with one provision requiring an individual who owes more than $2,000 or has fallen more than three months past due on court ordered child support payments to be denied winnings.
While this is now a law, casinos have been given a temporary reprieve from implementing the process until the state is able to build an online system that would provide the casinos an extensive database. While the state will be responsible for maintaining accurate records in the database, casinos will be responsible to verify the name of any gambler winning more than $1,200 through the system. The Casino Association of Indiana has said that the program should be ready to go online next year.
Indiana is not the only state with such laws on the books, In 2008 Colorado became the first state to implement the law. States all over the country are following suit in an attempt to collect from deadbeat parents. The Louisiana House of Representatives voted last month 82-1 to implement a similar legislation.
