The first of Ohio’s four casinos broke ground this morning less than one year after voters approved a constitutional amendment to allow casinos in Toledo, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.
A ground breaking ceremony was held to mark the start of construction of the $250 million Hollywood Casino Toledo that will employ 2,100 construction workers over the next two years.
The casino complex is not expected to open until early 2012.
Penn National Gaming, the owners of the casino, said that the complex will be decorated in 1930’s style Art Deco and will have a 290,000 square foot gaming floor with 2,000 slot machines, 60 table games and 20 poker tables, along with entertainment and dinning venues. The casino will need to staff 1,200 employees when the facility is ready to open.
Penn National Gaming is also the license holders for another planned casino in Columbus, which will not be able to break ground until environmental conditions from the sites previous owners are cleaned up.
Lakes Entertainment backed by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert holds the licenses to build casinos in Cincinnati and Cleveland.
