There could soon be a new casino popping up west of Phoenix, Arizona near University of Phoenix Stadium.
According to federal officials, the go-a-head has been given to Tohono O’odham Nation to acquire part of the land needed near Glendale to build a casino.
The 54 acres of land is now part of the Tohono reservation.
“We’re pleased with this decision and we look forward to the next step in the process,” said tribe Chairman Ned Norris.
The tribe’s plan includes the development of a $500 million casino and resort on the site.
The proposed casino project has sparked controversy because the land is nearly 40 miles from any existing reservation land; however, the O’odham say they can include the site as part of their tribal lands because of a 1983 federal law that allows them to replace lands lost in the past.
While the newly acquired land is now part of the O’odham Nation, the tribe’s next hurdle will be getting the federal government to sign-off on it as a casino site.
