Gambling will return to the Jacksonville area this fall, almost eight months after SunCruz Casinos halted operations when its parent company Oceans Casino Cruises entered bankruptcy.
The casinos were closed and the ships were docked last December, however Mark Slotkin President of the new casino said the bankruptcy was not because the operation in Mayport was unprofitable.
Looking to capitalize on the gaming revenue left behind when SunCruz Casinos closed, Mark Slotkin formed Jax or Better LLC and is currently renovating a ship to take its place.
The Jacks or Better Casino, will be docked in the same location in Mayport that SunCruz Casinos operated from and will have 200 slot machines, 14 table games including craps, roulette, poker, blackjack, Spanish 21, and sports betting on events from around the world.
Up to 500 passengers can set sail on the 155 foot vessel and begin gambling once the ship reaches the three mile point of the shores of Florida into International waters.
“We are real casino games, real action, the real thing,” said Paul Denton, general manager of the Jacks or Better Casino and former manager of SunCruz Casinos. “Three miles out and you’re in Vegas.”
