Cordish Cos has been dealt a big blow today, when Maryland’s Court of Appeals overturned an earlier ruling by a lower court.
Cordish has been delayed in the development of a slot’s parlor in Anne Arundel County due to strong opposition from a citizens group, Citizens Against Slots at the Mall.
Last month the County Circuit Court ruled that voters did not have any say in the planned location of the casino since it was tied to an appropriation package for maintaining state and local government, however today, the Court of Appeals overturned that ruling.
With the new ruling, a referendum asking Baltimore residents if they support the development of the 4,750 slot machine casino at the Arundel Mills Mall will be on the November ballot.
The Maryland Jockey Club backed the citizens group financially, after it lost in the bid to obtain licensing to Cordish Cos. The Maryland Jockey Club planned to develop a slots parlor at Laurel Park but was disqualified when they were unable to pay the necessary fees.
