Newly appointed Government officials in Anthony, New Mexico are lending their support to the jobs that a $60 million casino development could bring to their town.
While plans proposed by the Jemez Pueblo tribe for a 24,000 square foot casino more than 300 miles from tribal land was shot down in 2008, the federal government has reopened the application.
“The application is moving forward because there’s a new administration and new people in the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Interior Department,” Former Las Cruces Mayor Ruben Smith said.
The controversial proposal has been in the works since 2004 with the delay hindering the livelihood of the small town on the Texas, New Mexico border north of El Paso. Although the distance from tribal land was of concern under the Bush administration, Obama’s may just allow it to move forward, which could bring more than 950 jobs.
