According to the European Union’s highest court, laws that protect state-run gambling monopolies in Germany are not justified, thus opening the door for private gaming companies to dive into the German casino market.
The Germans contend that justified betting monopolies by saying that they help protect consumers from the negative affects of gambling, but the European Court of Justice did not agree.
“The public monopoly of the organisation of sporting bets and lotteries in Germany does not pursue the objective of combating the dangers of gambling in a consistent and systematic manner,” the European Court of Justice said.
Germany, like a number of other European countries, had been trying to lock down things like lotteries and sports betting.
A group lobbying for change representing gambling firms, including PartyGaming, called the judgement a “landmark”.
At thin point none of the big boys in the industry said they have plans to move in to the German Market, but is only a matter of time before they do.
