Professional Poker Player, WSOP bracelet winner and online poker promoter Annie Duke appeared in front of lawmakers on Wednesday during a House Financial Services Committee hearing to urge Congress to legalize online gambling.
A supporter of U.S. Representative Barney Frank’s bill to legalize, regulate and tax internet gambling testified that online casinos are responsible for a growing number of poker players in the past decade.
“This industry is growing and not going away,” said Duke. “We should not stick our head in the sand.”
Duke tried to steer lawmakers that are split on the legislation to move forward with the bill by saying, “At its most basic level, the issue before this committee is personal freedom, the right of individual Americans to do what they want in the privacy of their homes without the intrusion of the government.”
Duke is one of five witnesses, including Ed Williams President and CEO of Discovery Federal Credit Union on behalf of the Credit Union National Association; Tom Malkasian Vice Chairman and Director of Strategic Planning at Commerce Casino and Lynn Malerba Tribal Chairwoman of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, testifying before the Committee.
If lawmakers vote to enact Frank’s Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act it would overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 and could potentially bring in as much as $42 billion to the federal government over a 10 year span.
