Applications for Missouri’s final gaming license are due to state regulators in less than a week, leaving two casino developers hoping that Cape Girardeau will lend their support to their individual projects before then.
City Council members will meet this evening in a closed door session to hear the recommendation from city manager Scott Meyer before voting.
Two developers, Isle of Capri Casinos and St. Louis Capital Partners LLC, have expressed interest in bringing a gambling venue to Cape Girardeau.
Regardless of the council’s decision, voters must still decide whether they will continue to support a casino within their borders now that a citizen’s initiative group has successfully got the issue on November’s ballot. Casinos are legal in Cape Girardeau however they have not been successful in the past obtaining a developer or a license. The group behind the ballot initiative wants to see if residents still agree to allow a casino.
“The gaming commission and everybody knows everything hinges on the vote in November,” Mayor Harry Rediger said. “But we’re ready to move forward and promote Cape Girardeau. We want to be sure they know we’re seriously interested in obtaining that license.”
