Alabama’s last remaining bingo casino could soon be shut down, despite public outcries.
On Friday the Alabama Supreme Court unanimously voted to overturn a temporary restraining order issued earlier by a circuit court judge.
The restraining order had blocked the Governor’s task force on illegal gambling from raiding, seizing equipment and shutting down gambling operations at the state’s largest non-Indian gaming facility.
However with the order overturned the Governor and his task force is fee to raid Victoryland in Macon County.
The Governor does not support gambling in the state and claims that operations in Houston, Lowndes, Jefferson, Walker, Madison, Etowah, St. Clair and Mobile counties have been shut down because they were operating illegal slot machines instead of electronic bingo machines.
Following the verdict an attorney representing Victoryland called the governments’ integrity into question and alleged that the Governor lobbied for Justice Murdock to hear the case and that the Supreme Court was influenced.
However Riley responded with equally threatening words saying that he vowed to stop all illegal gambling operations and would not stand for local officials protecting “gambling bosses”.
